Beyond Rehab in Park Slope: Bridging the Gap Between Physical Therapy and Personal Training

The Park Slope community is witnessing a new era of performance and recovery as more physical therapists take a stronger interest in personal training.

It wasn’t that long ago that physical therapy and personal training were viewed as two entirely different concepts – which, in a sense, they are. Physical therapists help clients overcome and prevent injury, while personal trainers help clients build strength and improve their physique – they each have a unique role.

Traditionally, these two professionals would work together to help clients reach their goals. Personal trainers acted as the primary provider, while the physical therapist was called when an injury occurred. The physical therapist helped the client recover – that way, he can return to his strength training routine.

While that still rings true today, we’re starting to see a new generation of physical therapists and personal trainers who have a solid commitment to both sides of the spectrum. Physical therapists are beginning to take a greater interest in personal training, while personal trainers are taking a stronger interest in PT.

So, what do we call this new generation?

You can call this new generation whatever you’d like, but we like to think of them as rehab-performance specialists. They’re a ‘new breed’ of PTs who adopted a hybrid approach that combines the healing power of physical therapy with the strengthening power of personal training – the best of both worlds, if you will.

At PhysioRX, we’re excited to introduce the Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY community to the new age of performance and recovery. By combining everything we love about physical therapy and personal training with modern-day technology, we can give our clients an opportunity to ignite real change in their lives.

As we wait to see what this new generation has in store for the weightlifting community, let’s take a look at some of the ways personal training and physical therapy can benefit you – especially when combined.

Personal Training: Looking, Feeling, & Functioning Your Absolute Best

We all understand the importance of regular physical activity, but most of us struggle to make it a normal part of our lives. A personal trainer is responsible for teaching, guiding, and inspiring individuals as they complete a series of exercises and activities to improve strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance.

Here’s how a personal trainer helps individuals look, feel, and function their best:

  • Creates a workout plan tailored around your specific interests and goals
  • Motivates you and encourages you, while also holding you accountable
  • Teaches you how (and why) to do specific exercises to build independence
  • Can give you nutritional advice (if they have a nutritional background)
  • It helps you make positive changes in your day-to-day life
  • Greater sense of confidence and improved mental well-being

We all have an image of ourselves that we would like to achieve or maintain. Some of us want chiseled abs, while others want bigger muscles or to run a 5-minute mile – it doesn’t matter what your goal is, a personal trainer gives you the foundation you need to achieve the look you’ve always dreamed of.

Physical Therapy: Restoring Mobility, Relieving Pain, and Preventing Injury

Injuries are inevitable in the world of sports, fitness, exercise, and life, in general. Whether you tear your ACL playing the sport you love, suffer a herniated disc while lifting weights, or sprain your ankle walking down your front steps, a physical therapist can help get you back on your feet – where we all belong!

Here’s how a physical therapist helps individuals recover from and prevent injury:

  • Reduces and sometimes eliminates chronic pain throughout the body
  • Improves mobility, movement, flexibility, and balance
  • Helps correct posture and form while working out (or in day-to-day life)
  • Guides you through exercises to help prevent injury and/or falls
  • Improves post-surgical outcomes and speeds up recovery

Suffering an injury can be a heartbreaking experience, especially when it keeps you from accomplishing your goals or keeps you away from the things you love. Physical therapy looks at the root cause of an individual’s pain or injury and treats it from the inside out. Once recovered, they turn to prevention.

PhysioRX: Changing the Game One More Time

There’s something so synergistic about physical therapy and personal training – they go hand-in-hand more than a pair of mittens on a cold Park Slope night. At PhysioRX, we’re not blind to this fact. In fact, we’re taking the ‘new breed, hybrid’ movement to an entirely new level with the introduction of technology.

We not only combine the likes of personal training and physical therapy, but we also combine the likes of in-person sessions with our state-of-the-art PhysioRX app:

  • In-Person Sessions - you’ll meet with your coach face-to-face in our Park Slope gym for a full hour as they go through a series of exercises and movements to help you reach your goals.
